From the author of the New York Times bestseller Eleanor & Park.
A coming-of-age tale of fan fiction, family and first love.
Cath is a Simon Snow fan.
Okay, the whole world is a Simon Snow fan . . .
But for Cath, being a fan is her life — and she’s really good at it. She and her twin sister, Wren, ensconced themselves in the Simon Snow series when they were just kids; it’s what got them through their mother leaving.
Reading. Rereading. Hanging out in Simon Snow forums, writing Simon Snow fan fiction, dressing up like the characters for every movie premiere.
Cath’s sister has mostly grown away from fandom, but Cath can’t let go. She doesn’t want to.
Now that they’re going to college, Wren has told Cath she doesn’t want to be roommates. Cath is on her own, completely outside of her comfort zone. She’s got a surly roommate with a charming, always-around boyfriend, a fiction-writing professor who thinks fan fiction is the end of the civilized world, a handsome classmate who only wants to talk about words . . . And she can’t stop worrying about her dad, who’s loving and fragile and has never really been alone.
For Cath, the question is: Can she do this? (Gooreads)
Rating: All the STARS! (Yes, every single star in this galaxy. Even more.)
This is how Fangirl makes you feel. This book guys…
I don’t even know how to put my love for this book into words or whatever. The last time I felt like this, felt like everything was right and just happy, with a book was Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins. How long ago was like? Oh, about three years ago. Books today, whether they be contemporary or not, are full of heavy topics spanning from the foster system to cancer. I have nothing against those books, I’ve read great ones, but there needs to be more books that when you open them it’s all sunshine and puppies and just happiness. Fangirl was exactly that. It was my saving grace really after I finished Allegiant. (Dear lord I need about FOREVER to recover.) I am so happy my friend forced me to read this book.
Cath is an 18 year-old girl who loves books, writes fan fiction, and obsessed with fictional characters. Mainly Simon Snow. Which, in this case, is basically the Harry Potter of Fangirl. Cath has to navigate the world of college alone. Cath has to be one of top 5 characters that I absolutely love. I’m pretty sure she’s tied for first. I related to Cath more than I’ve related to any, and I mean ANY, character I have read. Her relationship with Wren reminds me of the one I have with my older sister. She’s the outgoing one, the one who was out every weekend with friends (not as bad Wren). I will definitely say this one day:
“I don’t want to kiss a stranger,” Cath would answer. “I’m not interested in lips out of context.”
Now, I know how the synopsis speaks about two guys. Believe me I yelled at said mentioned friend over and over about that before I read Fangirl. If you’re worried about a love triangle, believe me when I say there is none. It was a breath of fresh air. None of that two-guys-OMG-love-at-first-sight. I loved that about this book, how everything progressed slow. Cath’s development as a character and her relationships with her friends. Speaking of friends…
REAGAN! REAGAN THE ROOMMATE. REAGAN, THE FRIEND EVERYONE NEEDS. She was exactly who Cath needed to get herself out of her shell. I think there should be a Reagan in every college because people need help socializing. Of course there should also be a Levi too. Levi…
WHY RAINBOW ROWELL?!?! WHY MUST YOU MAKE AN AMAZING GUY WHO JUST… GAH! I love him. Levi is completely different from other male characters. There isn’t any of that “I’m a Manly Man. Look, muscles.” I don’t know, that was the best I could think of.
“She smiled, and her eyes started to drift downward.
Back up to his eyes.
“You know that I’m falling in love with you, right?”
Gah, so amazing.
Fangirl is one of Those Books. The book that will stay with you forever. The characters will always be there waiting for you. I know I will read this again, and you should too. Please dear god, go buy this book or I will Baz after you. *giggles* Oh Baz…
