Books I Need: Snow Like Ashes by Sara Raasch

Release Date: October 14th 2014

A heartbroken girl. A fierce warrior. A hero in the making.

Sixteen years ago the Kingdom of Winter was conquered and its citizens enslaved, leaving them without magic or a monarch. Now, the Winterians’ only hope for freedom is the eight survivors who managed to escape, and who have been waiting for the opportunity to steal back Winter’s magic and rebuild the kingdom ever since.

Orphaned as an infant during Winter’s defeat, Meira has lived her whole life as a refugee, raised by the Winterians’ general, Sir. Training to be a warrior—and desperately in love with her best friend, and future king, Mather — she would do anything to help her kingdom rise to power again.

So when scouts discover the location of the ancient locket that can restore Winter’s magic, Meira decides to go after it herself. Finally, she’s scaling towers, fighting enemy soldiers, and serving her kingdom just as she’s always dreamed she would. But the mission doesn’t go as planned, and Meira soon finds herself thrust into a world of evil magic and dangerous politics – and ultimately comes to realize that her destiny is not, never has been, her own. Since I was in the 6th grade (maybe even 5th) I’ve following Sara Raasch. I don’t even know how I first found her blog, but I did. And it was when she was still on Blogger. She’s always been a huge inspiration for me and my writing because she never gave up. When I first read Sara’s post about selling a book I remember being so happy for her. Excited too. When I won her first Join the Blizzard contest (click me! Click me!)  I may have screamed. A lot. There was also some fangirling. Now, this book sounds absoultely amazing. It is also one of the most original plots I’ve read in a long time. I also love the winter so I already feel a connection to the Kingdom of Winter. If only October would come faster…

Oh god I’m going to be in college when this comes out.

Waiting on Wednesday

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Jill over at Breaking the Spine. It spotlights books that have not yet been released, but ones that you should pre-order today! Today’s book is:

World After (Penryn & the End of Days, #2)

Release Date: November 19th 2013

In this sequel to the bestselling fantasy thriller, Angelfall, the survivors of the angel apocalypse begin to scrape back together what’s left of the modern world. When a group of people capture Penryn’s sister Paige, thinking she’s a monster, the situation ends in a massacre. Paige disappears. Humans are terrified. Mom is heartbroken.

Penryn drives through the streets of San Francisco looking for Paige. Why are the streets so empty? Where is everybody? Her search leads her into the heart of the angels’ secret plans, where she catches a glimpse of their motivations, and learns the horrifying extent to which the angels are willing to go.

Meanwhile, Raffe hunts for his wings. Without them, he can’t rejoin the angels, can’t take his rightful place as one of their leaders. When faced with recapturing his wings or helping Penryn survive, which will he choose? (Goodreads)

For anyone who has read Angelfall knows what I’m talking about when I say we need this book. I loved Angelfall to the point where when I finished it, I started it again.  I need World After because gosh darn it these characters mean so much to me and I need to know what happens. If you haven’t read this series yet then please do. You won’t regret it.

Rebel Belle

Harper Price, peerless Southern belle, was born ready for a Homecoming tiara. But after a strange run-in at the dance imbues her with incredible abilities, Harper’s destiny takes a turn for the seriously weird. She becomes a Paladin, one of an ancient line of guardians with agility, super strength and lethal fighting instincts.

Just when life can’t get any more disastrously crazy, Harper finds out who she’s charged to protect: David Stark, school reporter, subject of a mysterious prophecy and possibly Harper’s least favorite person. But things get complicated when Harper starts falling for him–and discovers that David’s own fate could very well be to destroy Earth.

With snappy banter, cotillion dresses, non-stop action and a touch of magic, this new young adult series from bestseller Rachel Hawkins is going to make y’all beg for more. (Goodreads)

I love Rachel Hawkins. From Hex Hall to School Spirits, her books have been amazing. They’re witty but yet serious at the same time. I love that this book moves away from the world of witches and into one of kick-ass Southern Belles. I’ve been dying to read this Rebel Belle since she announced it. And can we just look at that cover? Is that not awesome with the pearls and the dagger and the pretty pink?

It looks amazing. If you haven’t read Rachel Hawkins books, please do. Instantly. Like now.

Daemon will do anything to get Katy back.

After the successful but disastrous raid on Mount Weather, he’s facing the impossible. Katy is gone. Taken. Everything becomes about finding her. Taking out anyone who stands in his way? Done. Burning down the whole world to save her? Gladly. Exposing his alien race to the world? With pleasure.

All Katy can do is survive.

Surrounded by enemies, the only way she can come out of this is to adapt. After all, there are sides of Daedalus that don’t seem entirely crazy, but the group’s goals are frightening and the truths they speak even more disturbing. Who are the real bad guys? Daedalus? Mankind? Or the Luxen?

Together, they can face anything.

But the most dangerous foe has been there all along, and when the truths are exposed and the lies come crumbling down, which side will Daemon and Katy be standing on?

And will they even be together? Goodreads

My thoughts: I still remember when I finished Opal. I had this moment. I read the last line, laughed hysterically hoping it was some form of a joke. Katy didn’t… Daemon?… J. Lynn seriously did not just write that. I looked at the book begging for it to change… then threw it clear across my room sobbing and curled up in the corner of my bed just staring at it. I think I blacked out at one. It was a very difficult time. I have to say that this is probably number one on my Most Anticipated Books of the year. Allegiant takes number two. Authors really had a thing for cliff-hangers this year. Also, if you haven’t started the Lux series, I would start it. It’s amazing.

What book(s) are you most excited for this year? Or maybe a book that’s out that you want to read? Let me know! Also, I’m hoping to have a review up later today.
